Why Skilled and College Athletes
The convergence of beauty and sports is having a moment.
While sports and fashion have long intersected — from five-time NBA champion Dennis Rodman’s enigmatic, gender-bending style through the ‘90s, to NBA players’ widely watched tunnel outfits — the synergy between athletes and sweetness could also be in its relative infancy, but consumers are beginning to concentrate.
Granted, sports fans aren’t yet creating Instagram accounts documenting the sweetness moves of their favorite athletes as they've begun to do with their fashion selections (see @leaguefits, @nbafashionfits), but they're watching the space, and corporations like Bubble, Sephora, Kinlò and others are harnessing athletes as a strategy to reach these consumers — and seeing promising breakthroughs because of this.

Zahara Jolie-Pitt, daughter of Academy Award-winning stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, is a recent highschool graduate. The 17-year-old is about to proceed her studies, heading off to one of the popular and esteemed historically Black colleges and Universities within the country — Spelman College.
The wonder celebrated not only together with her famous mom, but a slew of Spelman alumni, other incoming freshman and current students. On Saturday (July 30), mother and daughter linked up with the Spelman and Morehouse alumni associations for the ‘Spelhouse’ Back to School Send Off event in North Hollywood, a fundraiser that brought everyone together.

GoFundMe Heroes: Meet Hassan/Kyna Uwaeme
For Hassan Abdus-Sabur attending Howard University was a dream come true. But he never imagined that staying would prove to be so difficult or that he wouldn’t go on to graduate.
The Newark, Latest Jersey native says he spent two years on the well-known Washington D.C.-based HBCU studying elementary education before financial struggles forced him to depart the university and return home.
“That place [Howard University] molded and shaped me in a way that, , no other place could have…having to depart was like such a bitter pill, , it was hard,” he tells ESSENCE.
On the time, Abdus-Sabur was a 19-year-old first-generation college student. Now, he’s 48 and says not having the ability to finish his 4 years...
