WITH Q, DENZIL FORRESTER, STEPHEN FRIEDMAN GALLERY, LONDON, For 4 many years, Grenada-born, London-based painter Denzil Forrester has examined Black British culture through his wealthy documentation and composition of London’s West Indian community within the Eighties, to Jamaica’s reggae and dub club scene. His latest show, With Q is a survey of his works on paper from the last 40 years and latest paintings. Importantly, the show’s title addresses the racist incident involving a 15-year-old Black British schoolgirl identified as Child Q, who was strip-searched by police in a case that raised (much more) questions on police and their oppression of the Black community. A 2022 painting titled “Q” places the varsity girl amidst an empty nightclub, surrounded by three policemen,...

CFDA and Genesis House Team Up for AAPI Grant
In an effort to support the following generation of AAPI designers, the immersive space Genesis House and the Council of Fashion Designers of America are teaming as much as debut the CFDA/Genesis House AAPI Design + Innovation Grant. The five-month initiative is geared toward fostering talent within the AAPI community. Three up-and-coming designers can be vying for the CFDA’s inaugural AAPI innovation grant. Submissions can be open later this summer for this mentorship program. The trio will present their final designs to Prabal Gurung, actress Jodie Turner-Smith, Monse cofounder Fernando Garcia, Saks Fifth Avenue’s Sandra Park and Alina Cho, amongst others. The United Nations Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network hosted its annual meeting, co-convened by the Fashion Impact Fund and the United Nations Office for Partnerships, on June 1, on the United Nations Headquarters in Latest York. The event was attended by greater than 150 industry stakeholders, United Nations representatives and members of the media to debate actions, solutions and progress and advance knowledge to strengthen engagement to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals. What began over pizza in Milan with Miuccia Prada has turn out to be a model value mimicking on the subject of bringing more diverse creatives into the fold. And the Italian fashion house has Theaster Gates to thank for much of it. The artist and chairman of Prada Group’s diversity and inclusion advisory council has been busy bringing Black creatives to larger stages as a part of the Dorchester Industries Experimental Design Lab he co-created with the style house in 2022.
