‘Tattoo couture’: The designer turning fashion history into body
It’s been a busy year for 27-year-old designer and tattoo artist Laura ter Veer, AKA Star Bunni, as she’s known on social media. In January, she graduated from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, where she spent six years studying fashion and textiles. She moved to Paris soon after and landed a job at Margiela as a textile assistant, before leaving the role just a few months to focus on tattooing full-time.  With the help of social media, Star Bunni is booked and busy for the foreseeable future. Why? Because she’s turning rare pieces from fashion’s most treasured archives into permanent body art. Can’t afford or don’t have access to vintage Margiela, McQueen or Galliano? No problem: this tattoo artist will recreate it...

Tattoo machine nails and lasers: Is the future of
A tattoo machine, a microphone, a laser, and a pH-sensing tool – what might seem like the eclectic contents of a south London SET studio are, in fact, the latest nail art innovations from Dazed 100-er Viviane Lee (Cyshimi) and Ikaro Cavalcante (Occulted). During their residency at the Hybrid Body Lab at Cornell University, the duo created a series of functional nail art, challenging the traditional role of nail art and expanding its potential as a space for technological exploration. With projects including the ”Memory Nail,” which features a tattoo machine embedded in the nail to merge body modification with digital fabrication, and the ”Gossip Nail,” combining a microphone within the nail and a speaker in a ring for discreet communication,...

Min Yu is the tattoo artist turning sound into
Tattoos from artist Min Yu12 Images Most tattoos begin as a sketch. Min Yu’s start with a sound. The tattoo artist transposes audio into tattoos, whether it’s a voicenote recording, an ambient track, or a song you once fell asleep to. Drawing on a background in fine art, classical music and audio implementation, Yu’s work brings a layer of intention and meaning into an industry often criticised for throwaway design choices. “The process relies heavily on trust, connection and participation,” Yu explains. Though her own music often inspires flash or custom designs, client audio guides much of the work. Once a recording is received, she creates a visual video using an audio frequency analyser and custom code, meaning the sound frequencies directly...
