“Is that a Dior hair ribbon?!” asks actor Jenna Ortegawho has recently made us all consider each pigtail braids and a latest pair of Doc Martens together with her role within the Tim Burton-directed series Wednesday. “That is the second hair ribbon I’ve seen today. I feel they’re coming back!”
It was indeed a Dior hair ribbon, chosen to be worn for a celebration at The Grey Zone, a pop-up art gallery in Los Angeles, created in honor of a latest campaign for the Gris Dior fragrance. A number of days before, it was announced that Ortega had been chosen as a campaign face and member of the Dior Collective. (The group of ambassadors also includes Joseph Quinn and Maya Hawke of Stranger Things.)
Before the celebration began, we sat down together at her West Hollywood hotel. Ortega’s warmth and down-to-earth demeanor come across immediately. She was wearing head-to-toe Dior: flared jeans, black suede platform heels, and a cropped, bouclé varsity jacket emblazoned with “Christian Dior.” (In one other life, the 20-year-old might need been wearing one together with her highschool’s logo, I feel to myself.) Her glam was fitting for the party’s theme, featuring soft, sheer gray lids topped together with her fluttery lashes.
Some people might say Ortega is lovable, hands tucked into her fluffy Dior jacket to maintain them warm, but I’m not considered one of them because that might minimize the maturity and mastery that has defined her profession. That is, in spite of everything, the identical force that channeled Wednesday Addams’s badassery with unblinking acuity and held her own against Ghostface within the Scream franchise. Having acted professionally since childhood, she seems to have adapted to the demands of the craft and the cutthroat industry that surrounds it, transitioning gracefully into her adult acting profession.
Below, hear from Ortega on her relationship with fragrance and the way Wednesday Addams has influenced her style.
Allure: What’s your first scent-related memory?
Jenna Ortega: Ooh, I feel prefer it’s different each time. I grew up in a family with six kids, so there have been lots of scents going around, I’m not gonna lie. One: My mom’s cooking. I feel like I could recognize it from a mile away. They’re also just recipes I do know off the back of my hand, so anytime that I make them I feel like I’m immediately thrown back to my childhood. That is a extremely, really big one.
