Lindsey Vonn on Her Head Collection, Mikaela Shiffrin and

Lindsey Vonn takes every thing she does seriously. From the 82 World Cup victories and Olympic gold medals during her record-setting profession on the ski slopes to her high-powered gym workouts and red carpet fashion, Vonn is accustomed to being at the highest of her game.

4 years ago, she partnered with Head to create the Legacy brand of high-end performance sportswear. So it comes as no surprise that Vonn is intimately involved within the design of the gathering, working with Head’s global vp Roman Stepek to create a complicated assortment of ‘70s-inspired fashions that work as well on the mountain as within the lodge.

Her touch was evident for the approaching winter season by the injection of color and pattern — baby blue, red, off-white and black together with patchwork prints in water-repellent leather bombers, high-waisted Jet Pants, puffer jackets and a signature jumpsuit that Vonn spends a greater a part of a yr wear-testing to make sure each piece meets her high standards for style, comfort, performance and heat. “I hate the cold,” she said, somewhat paradoxically given her profession.

For the primary time this coming winter, Legacy is introducing a men’s line. The palette of black or red encompasses a few core pieces akin to a parka with PrimaLoft Black insulation, a water-repellent lightweight jacket with taped seams, an insulated base layer and ski pants. Stepek said the tight collection for men ticks all of the boxes and provides every thing a person needs for his time on the slopes or town streets.

The Legacy collection for men and girls in addition to the corporate’s performance line shall be launched at Saks Fifth Avenue this fall for the primary time. Until now Head’s apparel has primarily been carried at ski resorts, but Saks is adding the elevated Legacy collection together with the more “easily attainable” performance line, based on Jessica Goodman, executive sales director of Head Sportswear in North America.

Vonn was in Recent York Wednesday with the Head team to unveil the winter Legacy collection. Here, she talks concerning the collection, her favorite fashion designers, her charitable foundation and Mikaela Shiffrin.

WWD: You’ve been working with Head for 4 years and at last took the plunge into menswear with Legacy. Why now?

Lindsey Vonn: We desired to be sure that the ladies’s lineup was successful first. But there’s been such a high demand for the lads’s and Roman obviously has such a very good sense of fabric and he’s testing every thing in a whole lot of scenarios. With men, it must be technically perfect, versatile and likewise sophisticated. This line is chic and trendy. My boyfriend loves it and my dad loves it. My dad is definitely a really critical man. He’s a lawyer so he’s hard to please and he absolutely loved it, so I knew that we were onto something.

WWD: So are you able to share some styling suggestions for men and girls?

L.V.: Sure. I can at all times give suggestions and tricks. Layering — that’s an underrated tip. I like having my turtleneck sweater, jacket, a sweater vest — multiple layers simply to be sure that there’s no way I may very well be cold. And it just looks cool.

WWD: You might have the Legacy line with Head and also you used to have a line with Under Armour, but each were rooted in performance. Would you ever design a fashion line?

L.V.: We had a collab last yr with Gucci. And I definitely have a whole lot of relationships with other designers in the style world. Without delay we’re focused on skiing, but we’re moving into more of the life-style part — après-ski. We definitely have plans to go wider. I might like to expand into true fashion in some unspecified time in the future but I at all times need to be sure that I’m doing the most effective that I can at what I’m doing. So I don’t need to spread myself too thin and never give you the chance to essentially do that well. But I might like to someday, absolutely.

WWD: You mentioned Gucci and also you’re wearing Alice + Olivia, but what other designers do you want?

L.V.: I do know all the blokes from Gucci, so I even have a fantastic relationship with them. I haven’t met the brand new creative director. But I really like Off-White, vintage Tom Ford and Thom Browne is a very good friend. I really like him dearly. I really like that he’s capable of make such a novel style modern and fresh. I’m going to his couture show in July in Paris; I’m very excited, I believe it’s going to be amazing.

WWD: Are you going to walk within the show or simply spectate?

L.V.: I’m going to observe. Thom at all times has these extremely high shoes or a motorbike that’s 15 feet high. I believe for my very own safety, I’ll just watch in admiration.

WWD: Now that you simply not compete, how do you get her competitive urges out?

L.V.: I’m still working on that. I play a whole lot of tennis, I just have to do something physically very difficult that’s somewhat competitive. Skiing is different for me now. I’m having fun with the mountain in much alternative ways, like after I was a child. It’s family, friends, the mountain experience. It’s not the competitive adrenaline rush that I used to have. After I’m understanding really hard, I even have to be very present. There aren’t any distractions, no phones. It’s really the one time my brain is shut off. And I miss that.

WWD: So no pickleball for you?

L.V.: No, I don’t have enough friends for a pickleball game.

WWD: You might have the Lindsey Vonn Foundation where you’re employed with underserved girls through camps, scholarships and experiences. Why is that so necessary to you?

L.V.: It’s about empowering girls. It’s not specific to sports, but we try to offer them the boldness to consider in themselves, and to exit and check out to realize their dreams — whether or not they need to be a physician or a lawyer or a skier or a tennis player — I would like to offer them core fundamentals. So for instance, our empowerment camps — we’re going to have one in Denver and one in Park City this yr — has a curriculum. Our focus is, how do you modify something negative into positive. Numerous times, people will tell kids they will’t do something, they’re never going to be good at something. Kids are so easily moldable. If you happen to tell them they will’t do something, they really consider it. So we’re just attempting to reframe their minds, discuss positive body image, cyber bullying, and construct good, true friendships — the core basic fundamentals of life that hopefully, get absorbed and help them in the remainder of their lives. And we’ve also given $1 million in scholarships. So it’s 50 percent education, 50 percent empowerment. We’re attempting to do each.

WWD: Getting back to fashion, are there things brands at all times get mistaken when designing for female athletes?

L.V.: Yes, generally cut and performance. Numerous the materials are synthetic and never breathable, and we want certain things to breathe. And we want certain shapes. , I at all times need to be feminine, but have the performance aspect as well. I believe a whole lot of people just assume that in case you shrink it and pink it, that’s what we want. But definitely not.

WWD: Finally, how do you’re feeling about Mikaela Shiffrin breaking your record of World Cup wins, and the way far do you’re thinking that she will go?

L.V.: It’s so great to see one other American succeed. She’s such a fantastic role model and someone who can really carry the torch for our sport and all sports. I believe we want those positive role models because sports are so aspirational. She has unlimited potential and it’s only a matter of how far she desires to take it. So I’m excited to maintain watching her and see what happens.
