Ever wondered what the longer term holds for make-up? Animegvrl’s Instagram feed – a grid of flawless looks that mix painstaking artistry with digital techniques – looks like a reasonably good place to begin. Her work draws on a wealthy array of references, from runway collections and tattoo art to music albums, but are held together by her signature style: spiky, delicate brushwork and AR rendering in fastidiously chosen palettes, photographed every time on her unmistakably dewy three-quarter profile. It’s each raw and futuristic, an unsettling combination that offers a glimpse right into a latest age for beauty.
The Animegvrl Avatar began when her creator was at a low point in her life and feeling a bit lost. “I wanted a version of myself that would achieve anything she desired to,” she says. It worked: having began as a side project during art school, the Spain-born, Paris-based make-up and AR artist has gone on to earn a 60K-strong fanbase and a slew of collaborations, including Isamaya Beauty.
Crossing the road between the physical and digital realms, Animegvrl’s work increasingly uses latest technologies to bring her looks to life beyond the IRL world – most recently a series of AI looks that morph and alter on the wearer’s face. The last word goal? To vary today’s beauty standards. “There are such a lot of limitations with the standard beauty ideals that I felt the necessity of pursuing something different,” she says. “I would like to take the make-up industry where it’s never been before.”

Are you able to tell us a bit about yourself and where you grew up?
Animegvrl: I grew up within the south of Spain, lived there most of my life. The reality is that I at all times felt like I didn’t belong there or anywhere really. I studied Positive Arts and that’s how I began entering into make-up and digital art. I learned subjects like 3D modelling, installation and performance art, classic painting and drawing techniques… but slowly most of my projects became make-up related pieces.
I made a decision to maneuver to London as soon as I had the prospect. I discovered there that individuals really appreciated my work and my vision and I finally found the arrogance to pursue my craft full-time. I attended a few make-up schools in London, Paris and Barcelona and I even have been working in the sweetness industry ever since.
What’s it you do and why do you do it?
Animegvrl: Through my work, I explore the world of each traditional and digital make-up. My goal is to challenge the concept of beauty by creating luring yet uncomfortable compositions, and cross the road between the physical and digital world.
I would like to vary today’s beauty standards. I would like to take the make-up industry where it’s never been before. I’m super fascinated about combining traditional techniques with AI and latest technologies as I’m so drawn to the concept of constant change and evolution. I wanted to attain specific finishes and textures, even a level of detail that will be practically not possible to succeed in in the true world.
I do it because I would like to be a part of the longer term of beauty.
How did you get into it?
Animegvrl: I began to get into make-up full time around my third 12 months of Art School. My teachers didn’t really appreciate it and that made me hesitate about pursuing it full-time. I used to be at a really low point in my life once I created Animegvrl. I wanted to construct an Avatar, a version of myself that would achieve anything she desired to. And it blew up. That gave me the arrogance I used to be missing in myself and my work. Now I’m working with huge brands, magazines and participating in so many exciting projects, I actually couldn’t have done it without her.
What’s your earliest beauty-related memory?
Animegvrl: I used to be a reasonably creative kid growing up. I used to do these kinds of faculty pageants where all of us danced and wore costumes and whatnot. I remember my mom used to do that very specific make-up look on me for these sorts of festivals. All the time an excessive amount of peachy blush very targeting the cheeks and nose, and a few drawn-on freckles. Now as much as this present day, that’s still my on a regular basis make-up.
What’s been your profession highlight to date?
Animegvrl: Being aware that my art resonates with the world around me. Knowing that so many great artists and folks I had admired for thus long have an opinion about my work. Even getting criticised is an accomplishment for me. I assume making an impact in the sweetness industry has been my biggest achievement to date but I’m always evolving. I feel like I won’t ever feel ready because I even have such high expectations for myself.
Which fictional character do you most relate to and why?
Animegvrl: Akame from the manga Akame Ga Kill! I believe her character is so special. She looks as if a cold-hearted kid simply because she had a reasonably rough childhood but you learn later within the manga that she’s just socially awkward. She tends to cover emotions when she’s going through something, but she really cares about her comrades even though it may not look like it more often than not.
She and her sister Kurome were each sold as assassins to the Empire once they were very young. Akame was in command of protecting Kurome until they parted ways and it really jogs my memory of the kind of connection my sister and I share. (Regardless that the ending could be very different for them.) Also they each love food and devour an excessive amount of it similar to we do each time we get together.
What’s your favourite beauty look of all time?
Animegvrl: My favourite look of all time is completed by Val Garland for Alexander McQueen’s VOSS in 2001. I believe it’s just so iconic, beautifully executed in its simplicity and melts perfectly with those hospital headbands. I feel it’s the most effective look that’s ever walked on a runway.
What does beauty mean to you?
Animegvrl: Beauty is the whole lot and it’s in every single place. All the pieces that is taken into account beautiful and the whole lot that it isn’t is beauty to me. I discovered beauty my whole life where you least expect it to be.
When do you’re feeling most beautiful?
Animegvrl: Once I’m working on my craft I feel beautiful. Like I’m doing what I used to be placed on Earth to do.
What’s the longer term of beauty?
Animegvrl: Experimental, in constant change and evolution.
You’ve gotten the flexibility to live in a video game. Which would it not be?
Animegvrl: Dark Souls. It’s my favourite game of all time. I find the lore so complex, all characters are beautifully designed and every of them has such interesting storylines. The entire universe is just magical. I even have done many looks and digital art inspired by the Souls-Borne universe. Even the way in which I do my hair on a day by day basis has something to do with it.
You’ve gotten to exchange a part of your body with that of an animal or a mythological creature. What do you go for?
Animegvrl: I might like to have a mermaid tail just so I can seduce men and drown them down the ocean 🙂
You encounter a hostile alien race and sound is their only mechanism for communication. What song would you play to them to encourage them to spare you and the remainder of the human race?
Animegvrl: “Stolen Dog” from Burial. It at all times seems to calm me down so it has to work on aliens as well.
