PARIS —Dakar Fashion School African fashion is having fun with a renaissance as a latest generation of designers captures the imagination of luxury brands and consumers. But while the continent is wealthy in creativity, most brands have found it difficult to grow beyond their borders as a result of an absence of formal training.

That’s the assessment of Sophie Nzinga Sy, a Senegalese designer who has opened the Dakar Design Hub, a training facility that gives courses for budding fashion entrepreneurs and native tailors alike.

Nzinga Sy launched her Sophie Zinga brand in 2012 after studying fashion design at The Recent School’s Parsons School of Design in Recent York City, having dropped out of her earlier economics studies at college.

“I opened my first store in 2013, began attempting to recruit from different design schools like you’ll normally do and just looking for factories who could develop my collections. And I had a very hard time and it was like an awakening for me,” she said.

“I literally couldn’t imagine it because for me, Dakar is considered one of the style capitals [throughout] Africa, so I believed that it could just be easier to seek out an assistant clothier or a patternmaker and it was really, really difficult. And the more I traveled across the continent, whether it was in Ghana or Nigeria, I might speak to my colleagues and they might say the identical thing,” she said.

She sold a house she owned for seed money and eventually obtained a $50,000 loan from the Délégation Générale à l’Entreprenariat Rapide des Femmes et des Jeunes, or DER, a government entrepreneurship institution that helps small- and medium-sized corporations.

The German Agency for International Cooperation, often known as GIZ, provided funding for salaries, machinery and other costs, but Nzinga Sy is looking out for added partnerships. A team from Chanel, which is preparing to show its Métiers d’Art collection in Dakar on Tuesday, recently visited the premises.
