Doja Cat was by far one among the highlights of the SS23 fashion season, where she served out-there looks due to make-up artist Laurel Charleston and a series of vibrant face paints. Front row at Marni, for instance, the artist sported a Teletubby-esque orange painted head, while for A.W.A.K.E. Mode she transformed into an Oscar statuette, her face and torso covered in gold. And this season, it seems, Doja shouldn’t be afraid to maintain pushing the boundaries of front-row beauty.
Earlier today, the SS23 Couture season kicked off with Schiaparelli, at all times a highlight of the Paris schedule. Inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Inferno, the runway presentation was a feast for the eyes as models walked in looks featuring massive animal heads (a reference to the beasts of The Divine Comedy) and cocktail dresses trimmed with jewelled peacock plumes. For the sweetness, Pat McGrath brought Daniel Roseberry’s signature gold-plated faces to life, turning the models into moving sculptures with golden faces and body paint, created using her upcoming FetishEyes Liquid Eye Shadow in Platinum Bronze.
As spectacular because the runway was, nevertheless, attention was pulled away to the front row where Doja was much more of a distraction than any of the models or looks. Wearing a strapless red evening gown, the Dazed cover star complemented the outfit by covering her entire face and body in crimson crystals.
Taking inspiration from Dante once more, the look was titled “Doja’s Inferno” and took McGrath and her team 4 hours and 58 minutes to create, with over 30,000 hand-applied Swarovski crystals getting used. Praising Doja’s patience and commitment, McGrath said it was an honour to collaborate along with her and called the look a “magical, mesmerising masterpiece”.
We will only imagine what other extreme looks Doja has in store for us over the subsequent few days. While we wait in anticipation, enjoy all angles of the look below after which read our cover interview with the star here.
