Georgia May Jagger on Jerry Hall’s best beauty suggestions.

What higher option to rejoice Mother’s Day than to ask two young women involved in the sweetness industry for what they’ve learned from their successful mothers?

Here, WWD talks with Georgia May Jagger about her mother, Jerry Hall, and Charly Sturm about her mother Dr. Barbara Sturm.

WWD: How did your mother shape/influence the way in which you define beauty?

Georgia May Jagger: The most important thing she taught me was the importance of acceptance and paying as much attention to your sense of self as your image. It sounds cheesy but this has allowed me to define beauty for myself and never feel an excessive amount of external pressure. She was a terrific example for me. She is understood for being very glam and he or she loves to decorate up, but she can be just as comfortable in jeans, plaid shirts and cowgirl boots. I believe that’s influenced how I take into consideration beauty and fashion, a option to play and express myself in numerous other ways. Her love of sustainable and homemade beauty products also fueled my beauty passion and my business ventures, including my investment in Bleach London, which is 100% vegan and PETA approved, and my latest skincare brand May is a product of years of blending oil hair masks and face creams in my kitchen with my mum.

WWD: Did you ever go against beauty advice that your mom gave you? And in that case — how did it prove?

G.M.J.: Yes, she didn’t enjoy my teenage years; my ripped tights and green eyeliner raised an eyebrow or two through the years. She also hated my high-tops and faux tan but gave me space to figure it out. As I grew up, I noticed how much she influenced me and the way the years of fiddling with her clothes and makeup helped shape my style. My mum all the time championed DIY beauty; she dyed her hair and made beauty products in her kitchen, which has been passed on to me. I remember the primary time I dyed my hair against her wishes — pink, blue and green patchy stripes (I didn’t spread the colour). Luckily, my work with Bleach London has meant that through the years my technique has improved. Now even mum has began experimenting along with her hair too. It’s nice that we are able to now share advice.

WWD: How did your mother shape/influence the way in which you define beauty?

Charly Sturm: My mom has all the time encouraged me to like and be confident in my skin, and that hasn’t all the time come naturally for me. She never wore much makeup and as an alternative focused on taking good care of her skin. That stuck with me, and although I even have had struggles with my very own skin, I’ve all the time tried to do the identical. I maintain my skin very diligently and our line works wonders for me. After I was younger, I made the classic mistakes of applying an excessive amount of eyeliner or powder and now I attempt to take a far more natural approach. I keep my use of makeup as minimal as possible — unlike my mom, I do prefer to wear it more incessantly but in a way that’s subtle and makes me feel more confident.

WWD: Did you ever go against beauty advice that your mom gave you? And in that case — how did it prove?

C.S.: After I was in my mid- to late-teens and my mom had already launched her line, she all the time urged me to start out using the products. At that time, I used to be going through a tough phase with my skin, plenty of breakouts and unevenness and I used to be convinced that only pharmacy products that felt like they were “working” by burning or tingling would fix it. My mom taught me to take a healing approach as an alternative. I finally listened to her advice, stopped using harsh products and switched to her line as an alternative and my skin calmed down and improved. Since then, I try my best to take heed to her, especially in the case of intriguing latest beauty trends.
