Jennifer Lopez on Beso Balm, Her ’90s Supermodel-Inspired Routine

Jennifer Lopez expands into the lip category along with her newest JLo Beauty product: Beso Balm Ultra-Hydrating Lip Mask.

Launching Thursday, it’s a balm-mask hybrid meant to be reapplied throughout the day and worn thicker overnight.

“I desired to create really my dream balm,” Lopez said over the phone. “I just hadn’t found one yet that ticks all of the boxes. So, I went to work creating my very own, which is how we give you a whole lot of the ideas for the products. I’m like, ‘OK, we have now a glow serum. We’ve got the cleanser, the serum, moisturizer, the SPF, the mask. What’s missing? What else am I putting on at night that’s a part of that routine?’ And it was at all times lip balm.”

The formula comes from South Korea, a buttery texture with a vanilla scent. The flavour is inspired by Lopez’s favorite childhood dessert, flan de vainilla.

“It was like being back in my grandma’s kitchen,” she said. “I’m obsessive about it. She would only make it at Christmas, sometimes at Thanksgiving, and I might just stay up for all of it 12 months.”

Using candelilla leaf extract for a smoothing effect, Beso Balm goals to deliver a hydrating, non-sticky plump look with a glossy finish. Priced at $19 (8 ml), it’s available online at jlobeauty.com, sephora.com, amazon.com, revolve.com and choose Macy’s stores (in addition to online). Beso Balm will likely be included within the JLo Beauty holiday gifts sets, also out Thursday.

“When I am going to bed, the last item I do is I placed on my lip balm,” Lopez said. “It’s literally by my bed immediately.”

Her lip routine nowadays is ’90s-inspired, she said: “I’ve began doing this sort of modern twist on the supermodel lip where you do the darker liner and shade after which just put a lipstick in the center that’s lighter. But with the Beso Balm, I do it not as dark as they used to do for the supermodels, but just a little bit bit darker than my natural lip. I shade it, I contour the sides after which I put the Beso Balm in the center for a really pouty, glossy wet lip look. It gives you the bigness but it surely also gives you this pouty, kissable, beautiful, glossy lip.”

Beso is Spanish for kiss in any case, an ode to her Puerto Rican roots.

“We’ve got an enormous Latina following,” said Lisa Sequino, cofounder and chief executive officer of JLo Beauty. “And clearly Jennifer is of Puerto Rican heritage, so we felt prefer it was a pleasant option to cross over and be a little bit bit more playful with the name.”

Staying mum on financials, Sequino said they expect Beso Balm “to just do as well or greater than our JLo Body launch last 12 months. And our JLo Body sold out in lower than 24 hours. So, we have now big ambitions for this.”

After entering Macy’s in October, JLo Beauty has ambitions for international expansion.

“I think it’s going to pave the trail for future endeavors,” Sequino said of venturing into lip care. “We also only offer our branded products in North America. So, we stay up for seeing a shiny future and plenty of opportunities ahead internationally. The shopper has definitely demanded that we go international for a while.”

Consumers have largely been profession women and mothers aged between 30 and 50, she added. “I prefer to call her the on a regular basis superstar, because she does all of it — similar to Jennifer can do the Super Bowl after which also pick up her children from school.”

A day in Lopez’s life as of late — she’s married to husband Ben Affleck and sharing twins with ex-husband Marc Anthony — is centered on music, while balancing acting, producing and life as an entrepreneur.

“I’ve been working really hard on my recent album project,” she said of “This Is Me…Now,” which will likely be her ninth studio album. “It’s a giant project. I announced it last 12 months as a musical experience, a trilogy, and I’m very enthusiastic about that. And in order that’ll start on this fall and within the winter and into next 12 months. And so far as JLo Beauty, there’s gonna to be a whole lot of amazing moments to bring those two worlds together in a robust way, hopefully.”

Asked about her definition of beauty and the way it’s evolved through the years, she said: “My mom at all times, perhaps not told me, but shows me by example, that I didn’t need the likes and acceptances of other people to be ok with myself. And it took me an extended time to actually imagine that she was right. But now I attempt to pass that lesson on to my very own children, especially on this age of social media. But it surely’s ultimately something that we each have to discover on our own. But it surely is de facto true. Being and feeling good about yourself and laying your head down in your pillow and feeling good in regards to the belongings you did today, whether it was your beauty routine otherwise you worked out otherwise you helped someone who needed help, those kinds of things is what should make you want and accept yourself, not when someone thinks a few picture you posted or a few comment you made or anything like that.”

She went on, “Understanding what self-love is taught me to unapologetically own every a part of me, my body, my voice, my selections. You recognize, even my mistakes. And today I actually imagine that. Being beautiful is being beautiful on the within and the skin and being comfortable in that skin, in your individual skin. We’ve all got hang ups, and we’ve all made mistakes, but those imperfections, if we allow them, help us and make us grow and in addition make us one in all a form. There’s nothing more beautiful, I believe, than a girl who knows who she is and owns it completely.”
