Rina Sawayama is bleaching her eyebrows and considering purple contact lenses for her movie premiere, John Wick: Chapter 4. For a lot of humans, these decisions is likely to be a bit… eccentric. But for the model turned pop star turned motion movie assassin, anything goes to shape the glamour, the moment, the look. She is willing to take risks: It’s how she came, in spite of everything. Hours before she hits the red carpet, I sit down together with her to catch up and watch the glam team transform her from beautiful to goddess-like in a matter of moments.
“John Wick is a miracle movie to me,” she says. “I’ve been doing auditions and self-tapes within the background of music for years, but I hadn’t landed anything. Then I got a call from Chad Stahelski, the director, and he’d seen my music videos. He asked what I used to be doing for the following three months. I’d finished the majority of my writing for the second record and had a niche in my schedule. I used to be in Berlin three days later. The ink on the contract hadn’t even dried after I began stunt training.” Sawayama plays Akira, the concierge and daughter of the Osaka Continental Hotel owner, and a bow-and-arrow-wielding motion antihero herself. The stunt training to arrange for the role was no joke: five weeks of each day, nonstop work, night shoots from one to 5 within the morning, and constant drills.
