This was never a hurricane. When the NHC upgraded it to Cat 1, the real-time anemometers (in Freeport and Westend, Bahamas) and the Hurricane Hunter data (AF306 Mission #13 and NOAA3 Mission #14) do not support that upgrade. I didn't see any surface-level winds in the Dropsonde data that indicated sustained hurricane strength (74+ mph). The dry air to the south of the storm and the stable air mass to the north (at lower levels–an inversion) prevented strengthening. Look at the wind gust forecasts at or near FL landfall [(e.g. in Vero (35-40) and Melbourne (45-50mph)]. Those are GUSTS, not sustained winds. They're weak tropical storm levels. This is not a Cat 1, and never was. There was never an eyewall with a sustained wind field of 74+ mph to the surface.
