Serpent eyes and alien cheekbones: artist Daglara’s trans-species aesthetic

Serpent eyes and alien cheekbones: artist Daglara’s trans-species aesthetic
Athens-based artist Daglara explores how performance can create a martyr narrative with extreme emotions, and how one can reach a degree of frenzy. Her make-up, her art’s protagonist, is a trans-speciesist dream. Inspired by facial expression from the animal kingdom, her beauty looks recall to mind sci-fi creatures and the hypersexualised femme icon. Serpentine eyes, a dolphin brow, and alien cheekbones — with Daglara, it’s all about hybridisation.   Using a mix of seemingly disparate references, Daglara combines queer performativity with cutting-edge beauty and garment creation to boost problems with gender subversion. As Greece continues to be a rustic with an excellent deal of inherent prejudice, abiding to a system of heteronormative discrimination, her work comes as a very important force...

Grimes’ ‘alien scars’ are fuelling the post-human tattoo trend

Grimes’ ‘alien scars’ are fuelling the post-human tattoo trend
Grimes is the queen of post-human aesthetics, from her experiments in bio-hacking to her (as yet unrealised) plans to get matching brain chips with Lil Uzi Vert. Described as “beautiful alien scars”, each tattoos resemble tribal tattoos from a martian technocracy; their white lines giving the...

Warning: the below image could also be triggering for many who have experienced self-harm Grimes is set to prove she is just not of this world – or at the very least look as if she isn’t. In 2019 the Dazed Beauty cover star claimed she had undergone some serious bio-hacking with experimental surgery on her eyes to eliminate all blue light from her vision, while in February she made plans to get matching brain chips with Lil Uzi Vert. And now she has debuted a big recent tattoo across her back designed to appear to be “beautiful alien scars’. The intricate web-like design criss-crosses up and down her back and currently looks like red scratches or cuts but in line with...

Gooey alien make-up and other LFW Mens AW19 beauty

Gooey alien make-up and other LFW Mens AW19 beauty
London Fashion Week Men’s has been a whirlwind of gorgeousness. Contemporary queerness took centre stage on day one with Art School flying the Fashion East nest for his or her first solo show and Charles Jeffrey’s LOVERBOY transforming the disused Wapping Hydraulic Power Station right into a queer circus of performance and skipping models. Hair for Art School was deliberately dishevelled, while make-up was daring and brilliant. Over at Loverboy, hair stylists served up short, Nineteen Twenties, neat ringlets, while make-up was draggy af, leading the bleached brows brigade. From there Astrid Andersen continued the neat hair trend, but with a more contemporary feel and natural make-up. Fashion East presented Irish designer Robyn Lynch who left their beauty department casual,...
