In Berlin, Emerging Fashion Goes Big on Diversity, Politics

On the last edition of Berlin’s fashion week, one show particularly made headlines and caused confusion all over the world. With help from international activist groups, a Berlin creative collective, Platte, hosted a “fake” Adidas show, complete with a press release and a sensible runway collection, to spotlight Adidas’ alleged exploitation of staff on far-flung supply chains. The German company later denied the allegations. But before it did so, the style week event deceived greater than a number of industry insiders. Up until the last minutes of the runway show, many believed the entire thing was real. The Outside View: Diversity in Danger in Post-affirmative Motion Era

For 45 years, Supreme Court decisions have allowed college admissions programs to weigh race — as one factor amongst many — to make sure racial diversity in higher education. But last week’s majority opinion by Chief Justice John Roberts striking down affirmative motion ignores the realities of race in America. And as Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson stated in her dissent, it “stunts that progress with none basis in law, history, logic, or justice.” There are not any winners in ending affirmative motion on college campuses and little question that this decision will extend to other areas. While many firms’ inclusion stories began within the post-George Floyd era, Sephora’s began before that. The thought was a campaign called “We Belong to Something Beautiful,” which the wonder retailer launched in 2019 after a high-profile incident of racial profiling involving R&B singer Sza called for a moment of introspection and the closure of all stores for diversity training. “It was a sobering moment for Sephora to find a way to take pause and reflect.
