Ukrainian Tech, Fashion and Culture Spotlighted in Latest York

Ukrainian Tech, Fashion and Culture Spotlighted in Latest York
NEW YORK — As understatedly well-dressed guests filtered into the “i'm u are” cocktail party Thursday night, a crew of Ukrainian volunteers scurried two floors below painting wall text and realigning mannequins within the Ukrainian Creators Fair. Adaptability is something that most of the 120 makers that showcased on the inaugural event now know inside and outside. Taking a moment to talk while meticulously applying wall text, artist and filmmaker Yarema Malashchuk sized up the situation. “There's war in Ukraine, but Ukraine is just not only about war. Hopefully I’m working for and representing my country, by spreading the word about what is going on there and what’s happening in contemporary Ukrainian culture.” His work reflected the resolve that exists amongst many...

Contained in the Second Annual Fifteen Percent Pledge Gala

Contained in the Second Annual Fifteen Percent Pledge Gala
The Fifteen Percent Pledge gala returned to the Latest York Public Library on Saturday night. Just like last 12 months’s inaugural event, the dress code — “Black Tie, Black Designer” — encouraged fashion insiders and industry leaders to point out their support for Black-owned brands as they toasted the evening’s honorees and grant award winners. Brother Vellies creative director Aurora James launched the Fifteen Percent Pledge initiative in 2020 with the goal of getting retailers to commit 15 percent of their purchasing power to Black-owned businesses. The event honored Bethann Hardison, whose documentary “Invisible Beauty” premiered at Sundance last month, with the Pioneer Award. Beauty brand 54 Thrones received the inaugural Achievement Award presented by Shop with Google, which comes with...

Francesca Amfitheatrof Unfiltered: Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director for Watches

Francesca Amfitheatrof Unfiltered: Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director for Watches
It was a moment of Francesca Amfitheatrof unfiltered. Louis Vuitton’s artistic director for watches and jewelry made an appearance on the maison’s immersive exhibit, “200 Trunks, 200 Visionaries,” in Recent York on Thursday afternoon to debate her life’s work and her reinvigoration of Vuitton’s high jewelry collections. Held in what was formerly Barneys Recent York’s beauty department — where aesthetic plywood and graphic posters cleverly covered up what were perfume display shelves — Amfitheatrof said that her work centers on freedom and storytelling. “[High jewelry] is a really unusual world. It's a world where time and money don’t really matter. It’s a unprecedented world since it’s totally unrealistic. It’s separated from every thing else,” she told an audience of friends, fans and...
