On the last edition of Berlin’s fashion week, one show particularly made headlines and caused confusion all over the world. With help from international activist groups, a Berlin creative collective, Platte, hosted a “fake” Adidas show, complete with a press release and a sensible runway collection, to spotlight Adidas’ alleged exploitation of staff on far-flung supply chains. The German company later denied the allegations. But before it did so, the style week event deceived greater than a number of industry insiders. Up until the last minutes of the runway show, many believed the entire thing was real. Made in Italy, Politics Discussed at Future for Fashion Conference
FLORENCE — Politics and the connection between the style industry and the Italian government took center stage on the Future for Fashion conference on Friday. Held at Palazzo Pitti’s Sala Bianca, the two-day event was closed by the Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso on the identical day Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella was expected in Florence on the Chamber of Commerce conference. Leonardo Ferragamo, chairman of the Ferragamo company, spoke of the necessity to intensify the conversation with political institutions, and beyond local confines. In my profession as a fashion editor, I often find myself occupying two very different worlds without delay. The more extravagant, most photogenic parts of my existence coexist with deadlines, bills and grocery shopping (i.e., the very un-Instagrammable bits). It’s common for me to rub shoulders with royalty, billionaires and Oscar winners at an industry event then take the night bus home. I'm each an insider and an outsider, a participant and an observer. The surreal is by now completely abnormal. In Paris in July, as probably the most recent round of high fashion collections was unveiled, that surrealism was amplified.
