Summer is finally here, so it is time we start asking ourselves the necessary questions: should I plan a vacation? Fall in love? Refresh my hairstyle? The reply is yes, yes, and definitely yes. For those who’re craving a recent cut, look no further than the butterfly haircut trend. This layered look has infinite styling possibilities and is the rare cut that enables you to switch things up without having to cut all of it off. (Though that may be fun, too!)
Just spend a short while scrolling TikTok, and also you’re sure to come back across a creator with ridiculously bouncy, butterfly layers. “Increasingly clients are asking for a butterfly haircut, they usually’re all learning about it on TikTok,” says Drea Dettmersa hairstylist based out of Tallulah East Collective in Salt Lake City, Utah. Addison Rae and Matilda Djerf are two TikTok stars which have popularized the layered look, as have celebrities like Sydney Sweeny and Kaia Gerber.
While the hype is recent, the cut shouldn’t be. “For those who look back to ’90s glam or Rachel from Friends, you’ll see the face-framing, voluminous layers that make the butterfly cut what it’s,” says Teryn Tucker, a hairstylist at Alchemy Salon in Orlando, Florida. This time around, the cut has been coined the “butterfly haircut” by hairstylist Sunnie Brook for its duality as each a brief and long haircut. Similar to a caterpillar and butterfly, this one haircut gives you two completely different looks, depending on the way you style it.

What’s a butterfly cut?
A butterfly cut (also referred to as a thousand-layer or octopus haircut) is a really layered haircut that strikes a balance between shag and long layers. The excellence between the butterfly and other layered cuts is that the butterfly cut has two obvious sections: long layers that fall below the shoulders to provide the illusion of length, and short layers that hit two to 3 inches below the chin to border the face and add volume. The refined layers of a butterfly cut are a shift from the beachy, lived-in waves which have dominated for years.
Who should get a butterfly cut?
The butterfly cut is great for anyone who desires to create the illusion of fuller, healthier hair without sacrificing length.”Butterfly layers let you alter up your hair and not using a drastic cut,” says Dettmers.
“It creates volume and shape, while removing damage from every level,” says hairstylist Ashley Lynn, a hairstylist with a specialty in curly, textured hair at Ashley Lynn Haircare in Charlotte, North Carolina.
