What a load of bs. These people play along to get free plastic surgery and then find a way to cash-in by suing?? Did she think they were just doing this to be kind? It's a TV show! "Poor me – now I can't leave the house, cuz my sister said I'm ugly" even though her episode never aired!!!! Give me a freakin break.

Blepharoplasty is basically an eyelid lift. Removing excess fat and skin from your eyelid. Can be a cosmetic surgery but also for older people who’s eyelids are obstructing their view.

It's a shame with the depression that comes from all of this and what they have to do. Deleese especially I mean come on. I hope she gets closure from that. PS: I was distracted by your nails a lot too. Love the colors lol

Awesome video! I deal with body dysmorphia and shows like this and some aspects of social media, where people have "perfect" bodies and skin does not help. I like to exercise and go to the gym but because of the way my brain works, I'd constantly compare myself to much leaner/more muscular people, mainly people online. It's a bad headspace to get into, especially since going to the gym was something I did to improve my mental health, which it did, but also worsened my self image.
Self improvement, glow ups, weight loss, all of that stuff is good, but everybody is beautiful the way they are, perfection doesn't and will never exist ????

I had pretty drastic dental work done and even THAT was difficult to cope with mentally. I couldn't IMAGINE going through these procedures like that with no mental healthcare

I live in Canada, and I remember how controversial Extreme Makeover and The Swan were when they came out. I never did watch them. I started watching one episode of The Swan just out of curiosity, but I just felt bad for the one woman I saw in that segment that I couldn't continue.

I can see the appeal as so many people have insecurities, especially about their appearance, but it just wasn't for me.

I was hooked on Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition. I still watch it sometimes if I can catch it. I never liked The Biggest Loser, though. I'm not a fan of Jillian Michaels.

I think tv shows were very vain back in the day BUT I feel like it’s a lot worse today. Yeah lots of people wanted to be models and such but nowadays any girl that has an Instagram is a “model”. Idk, I think things are more look based now than ever.

It’s really sad that someone died and that should never have happened, but saying it’s the responsibility of the television company to provide after show physiological care for people who were on their show…. Really, they chose to go on the show, nobody forced them to go on the show. Maybe they should also provide health insurance for the rest of their lives. It’s a TV show. Nobody is forced to apply to be on the show. Yes perhaps they need to be more open and transparent, and less predatory, but people also need to understand the whole contract before signing anything. I guess James is making this video so other people know that it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be and don’t apply for these shows. “Now we know how fake reality tv shows are” there was never any “reality” in reality tv shows, it’s TV, if you’re expecting reality you’ll be sorely disappointed.

I used to watch The Swan with my mum when I was still in secondary school. I had no idea at the time how damaging it was to my teenage brain, and how it made me be believe happiness could be achieved with plastic surgery/purely physical transformation. At 31 I feel much happier with how I look than I did back then and accept my physical "imperfections" as part of what makes me beautiful. HOWEVER, on a bad mental health day I still find myself believing I could fix how I feel internally if I got a nose job, a neck lift etc etc. Unrealistic beauty standards are everywhere, but I'm sure that watching shows like The Swan at a young age has been one of the biggest contributors to me growing up with this awful idea that if I could just change my face and body I'd be happy. It didn't help that my mum suffered with depression and body dysmorphia throughout my childhood and idolised The Swan, often saying she wished she could be a contestant. Watching this video has really helped shed some light on why I still occasionally hold such unhealthy beliefs.

Being only a couple years older than James & from ???????? too, this video really hit home for me! I used to absolutely love watching extreme make-over, 10yrs younger & the Swan etc … they were all the rage & I used to be so impressed with the final results thinking that the contestants must be so happy!! It also made me more insecure being a teen, as America's next top model was also popular as hell… it was all about beauty in the early 2000's and I was like: Oh, I wish I could get veneers/ lip filler for my barely there top lip/ a bit of lipo for my thighs & hips.
I was a teen overwhelmed with the effects of hormones & puberty kicking in (kinda late compared to school friends as I was 14½/15) I'd suddenly gained a body shape after with everyone telling me 'you're so lucky to have an hour glass body'.
But, there was me.. struggling with getting used to my new body shape and hating my new shapely thighs & hips, along with the stretch marks that came with it. Within 3 months I went from being straight up&down skinny UK size 6 & AA boobs to a size 8-10 with full C cup boobs!!! I wanted lipo after watching all these programmes so badly for my thighs & love handles and I was literally 15… x

I’ll always be grateful that my mother and sister never watched any of those shows when I was young. I grew up confidant and happy with my body, even in the times I was chubbier or had a bad haircut. I never felt the need to watch them either and when I had friends that did they were always very judgmental of others in general and hard on themselves.

    Tragic.

Only 1 makeover show ever had a positive impact on me and it was Gok's How to Look Good Naked. He was always so kind and also tried to find clothing styles the participants would be happy in. I vividly remember when he'd line people of different sizes up and ask the participant to stand where they thought their size was and it was always way off! Really made me realise howbwe do not see ourselves as other people do. Stuck with me for years!

If you want to see an example of how little producers care about their cast members, watch Bling Ring. The producers of "Pretty Wild" literally laugh about the arrest, drug addiction and trauma of the main subject of their reality TV show.

That Mama June from that honey boo boo show got one of these types of makeovers before she got hooked on crack or meth or whatever it was. I think it is still on even though she gained all the weight back after she got sober.

I remember when The Swan came out and being horrified by the concept. Imagine being told you're so ugly that you need thousands upon thousands of dollars of plastic surgery to be beautiful. AND THEN being put in a contest about being beautiful and losing because there's only 1 winner. WTH? Just massively f'd up.
