Why I had my teeth filed into fangs

Why I had my teeth filed into fangs

We seek advice from London-based filmmaker Tessa Edwards about big canines and obscure beauty trends

You would possibly have already come across London-based filmmaker, Tessa Edwards. Possibly at one among her early fashion shows, like that one she staged in a forbidden forest, where models clad in gold and crystals walked against an otherworldly video backdrop. Or possibly you got here across her candid StyleLikeYou video, where she talks in regards to the pressures of the style industry, having left all of it behind her. If not, you have to have seen her at Tinaween, where she hands down all the time has the most effective looks. The truth is, she all the time looks amazing. At yet in accordance with Tessa, she’s all the time felt like there was something missing: big canines.

Call it a tooth fetish or possibly even an orc fetish (she once dated a man with orc-like teeth), Tessa’s been fiddling around along with her teeth since she was a child. She once superglued Claires Accessories Swarovski earrings to each bracket on her braces. “It lasted two weeks in school till I ultimately ended up swallowing most of them,” she says. She’s also tried filing her teeth several times DIY style, but with none meaningful results, that’s until she found Dr Rhona Eskander and had her canines transformed professionally into two perfect points with added resin and quite a lot of filing. When we predict of body modification, we predict of it by way of extremes, but in Tessa’s case these alterations are incredibly subtle and yet their effect is palpable. Here we seek advice from Tessa about life with fangs and the long run of beauty.

What do you think that sharpening your teeth has given your face by way of symmetry and overall aesthetic?
Tessa Edwards: I believe I look more feline, my smile has widened, they usually even push my lips out a bit too…which is all quite flattering. I do also think there may be a more subtle visual message, that perhaps only speaks to the primordial subconscious, where the teeth fit right into a ‘predatory’ forged.

When we predict of modification particularly with reference to teeth it’s always very extreme, you’ve gone for a more subtle version. Why’s this?
Tessa Edwards: Since it’s workable, practical and real. Also, I even have a good bite and what’s called a ‘Class 2’ jaw (Kate Moss has this too apparently. Fab.) so until I get braces to widen it I actually can’t go greater or they are going to just crack and likewise could cause headaches.

So do you think that you’ll go more extreme in the long run?
Tessa Edwards: Possibly after I get braces. But not now.

How do they make you’re feeling?
Tessa Edwards: Sexy wexy.

Do you think that you look beautiful?
Tessa Edwards: I might say ‘higher’. I even have even stopped wearing make-up more often than not.

Do anyone else who has had it done?
Tessa Edwards: No, I do not know anyone else, but then I do know individuals who have gotten veneers and I believe that is more bonkers. I do know of people that have done tooth sharpening, for instance in Japan there was a trend called Yaeba, also tribes from Ethiopia to Sumatra do that in various degrees for various reasons.

Do you see it becoming a trend?
Tessa Edwards: Once I initially had it done back in October I used to be going to place it on Instagram but decided to not because I actually really didn’t want anyone to repeat me. Especially only for trend’s sake. It sort of cheapens it for me.

Tell us a bit in regards to the procedure? Did it hurt?
Tessa Edwards: Identical to going to get my acrylic nails done. It didn’t hurt in any respect

How did you discover a dentist to do it?
Tessa Edwards: Well, I just occur to know “the most effective cosmetic dentist in London” (she wins a great deal of awards every 12 months and is kind of fabulous). Dr Rhona Eskander. She is great and is my mate. She also was a bit distressed when she discovered I as filing my very own teeth, so offered to assist.

What effect have they’d on how people interact with you?
Tessa Edwards: Actually nobody has really noticed. But I reckon people aren’t sure why they suddenly find me sexier, but then that could possibly be many reasons really.

What do you think that your recent teeth convey to individuals who do not know you?
Tessa Edwards: I actually don’t think they’d consciously notice.

Have they modified your perception of beauty?
Tessa Edwards: Nope.  I even have all the time thought that “beauty” is so subjective, and it’s what suits each individual. Getting it improper or right is dependent upon the person’s values I suppose. I do think it’s cool to have your personal thing happening though, it makes things interesting.

Here’s a deep quote from a philosopher:

And everyone seems to be blonde
And everyone seems to be beautiful
And when blondes and delightful are multiple
They change into so dull and dutiful
And when faced with dull and dutiful
They fire red warning flares
Battle-khaki personality
With red underwear

What sort of things do you’ve to do by way of upkeep? Is there anything you possibly can’t do? How long do they last?
Tessa Edwards: Urgh…well, I’ll probably need to get them sharpened and even re-done quite a bit, because as I said, my bite is tight…so until I sort that out I’ll probably keep chipping them.  Last month I had a crazy dream and chewed one right off then swallowed it. Otherwise, they’re purported to last like 10 years.

What do you think that is the long run of beauty?
Tessa Edwards: I’m wondering if there will likely be a beauty apocalypse where everyone has had a lot crap done to them that they implode and switch into an artificial zombie slime mass that then gets injected into the universe’s equivalent of its own arse. I believe possibly that is what Stevie hawking was on about…

What are you working on in the intervening time?
Tessa Edwards: My recent ‘digital media’ company, Dead Tom Moving Image.  We’re doing a number of very exciting projects with VR and stuff…
