LONDON — Edward Enninful is moving on, and up, at Condé Nast, with a latest, global role that he’ll take up in 2024 after stepping away from his post as editor in chief of British Vogue.
Enninful will tackle the brand new position of world creative and cultural adviser at Vogue, and will even turn into editorial adviser at British Vogue, in response to a memo obtained from a Condé Nast spokesperson.
He’ll proceed to contribute to the Vogue brand globally “while having the liberty to tackle broader creative projects,” in response to the memo, which was penned by Enninful. It didn’t give any further details about his latest role.
On Friday, Enninful told staffers in London that his promotion was the results of discussions with bosses Anna Wintour and Roger Lynch, chief executive officer of Condé Nast Inc., about how he could play “a broader role in enhancing Vogue globally.”
Even though it’s a promotion, the management structure won’t change, and Enninful will proceed to report back to Wintour, who’s global chief content officer for Condé Nast, and editor in chief of American Vogue.
Starting Friday, Enninful will even begin the hunt for a head of editorial content for British Vogue, a move aimed toward bringing the publication in keeping with the brand new management structure at Condé Nast, where content is shared globally and editors in chief are a thing of the past.
Enninful also told staff members that British Vogue’s latest head of editorial content “will partner very closely with you all and Anna.” The brand new person will initially report back to Enninful, after which to Wintour, just like the corporate’s other content chiefs.
He said that “for now every part stays the identical, and I’m so enthusiastic about what the longer term holds for us. I would really like to thank Roger and Anna for his or her continued support.”
Enninful has been working with Condé Nast for greater than 25 years. He’s widely considered to be a jewel within the editorial crown, and has long been tipped as Wintour’s heir.
He took over as editor in chief of British Vogue in August 2017 and in December 2020 was promoted to European editorial director of Vogue. He also served as creative and fashion director of W. He could also be committed to Condé — for now — but he’s made no secret of his future ambitions beyond the world of magazine publishing. It’s clear that Condé is keen to maintain him on side — and in pole position to take over if and when Wintour decides to depart.
Last September, during an interview about his memoir “A Visible Man,” Enninful told WWD in regards to the myriad possibilities that lay before him.
“After I began [at British Vogue] in 2017, I used to be coping with a magazine. Today, I’m coping with a brand that features print, digital, audio, video and podcasts, which is so exciting for any individual who’s so forward looking. In the intervening time, I’m really blissful doing what I’m doing. I never plan for whatever the longer term brings, whether it’s on this industry, or one other. I’m open. Anything’s possible,” he said.
An early adopter of Twitter, and a tech lover, Enninful said through the same interview that he’s particularly concerned with the intersection point of fashion, technology and retail. “That is what fashion is de facto coping with now,” he said.
In his latest, global role at Vogue, he should have the ability to explore that intersection, and other creative challenges, further.
