Prada Hires Sporty Latest Ambassador; Balenciaga Goes (Custom) Academic
PRADA’S SPORTY SIDE: Prada has named Chinese basketball player Shuyu Yang as its latest brand ambassador. The athlete appears in a series of photos and a brief film wearing pieces from the brand’s latest men’s collection and twiddling with a red basketball, or listening to music from a vintage turntable. With greater than 3 million followers on Weibo, China’s own Twitter, Yang reached national fame by helping China rating a bronze medal in the ladies’s 3×3 basketball tournament within the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Balenciaga Scandal Seen Contributing to ‘Bad as It Gets’
Balenciaga’s ad scandal stifled the brand’s “hyper growth mode,” notably within the U.S. and U.K., meaning fourth-quarter results for French luxury group Kering “might be as bad because it gets,” in line with an equity research report from HSBC released Thursday. The bank also cited slowing momentum in China and the U.S. and a “tough basis of comparison” as additional aspects more likely to have dented Kering’s revenues in the course of the crucial holiday season. It forecasts Q4 revenues, due out on Feb. 15, will slip 3.1 percent in organic terms, reflecting a 12.5 percent dip at Gucci and an 8 percent improvement in “other brands,” which include Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Boucheron, Brioni, Pomellato and Queelin. Balenciaga CEO, Demna Apologize for ‘Disturbing’ Ads 
The designer at the middle of the Balenciaga ad scandal has broken his silence.  In a post Friday on Demna’s Instagram account, which counts 373,000 followers, Balenciaga’s creative director wrote: “I would like to personally apologize for the unsuitable artistic alternative of concept for the gifting campaign with the children and I take my responsibility. It was inappropriate to have kids promote objects that don't have anything to do with them.”  The Georgian designer, who's susceptible to provocation and subversion in his designs, runway shows and communications, was referring to Balenciaga’s holiday campaign featuring children posing alongside handbags shaped like stuffed bears wearing bondage gear.  Individually on Friday, Balenciaga president and chief executive officer Cédric Charbit reiterated his “sincere apologies for the offense...
