It looks like you possibly can’t even log onto Instagram or TikTok as of late without seeing a plethora of Black women on picturesque beaches, over-the-water bungalows or exploring an exquisite foreign country. Travel offers the chance to experience a way of calm, serenity and even just the power to flee from the day-to-day hustle and bustle of our work and private lives.

In 2019 alone, Black U.S. leisure travelers spent a whopping $129.6 billion on domestic and international travel based on “The Black Traveler: Insights, Opportunities, and Priorities,” a report produced by MMGY Global, and our purchasing power is prone to continue to grow.

But behind the scenes, even probably the most well-traveled and revered women in travel face unseen hurdles. Because, like America, being Black seemingly makes other people uncomfortable just by our existence. Depending on the country, you will have to fret about being racially profiled, stared at, and even worse — seeming so foreign that strangers will actually want to come back as much as you and touch you (or your hair).

Let’s also not forget the general concern of crime and safety.

Recently, many travelers have taken to Instagram to document among the safest places they’ve traveled or felt comfortable as a Black woman. Though safety isn’t guaranteed at any cut-off date, anywhere on the planet, we’ve rounded up a number of destinations that you need to consider when planning your next trip.

Ghana

There’s a reason people consider their voyage to Ghana as a “homecoming.” For some, Ghana is a destination where worries about safety and racism are non-existent, and never to say a spot where expats have flocked to over the past couple of years. After all, nowhere is ideal. But in relation to culture, food, safety and overall quality of life — Ghana is pretty close.

Mexico

Mexico gets an undeserved bad fame for travel, particularly in the US, but not all parts are created equal. Tulum particularly has been a respite for Black travelers over the past couple of years, with a growing community of Black expats within the Yucatan Peninsula. What’s even best about traveling to Mexico is that they’ve a booming tourism infrastructure, excellent hotels at a wide range of price points, and several other well-worn tourist trails, especially within the Yucatán.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a tremendous island that Black women should explore. The continually tropical climate, the friendly locals and the limitless amounts of coquito are only a number of of the explanations, but even beyond that, Puerto Rico has a mixture of wealthy Black history and colourful culture that ought to pique everyone’s interest.

Bali

Bali isn’t called the “Island of the Gods” for no reason. Considered one among the safest places on the planet, Bali can be known for its beautiful natural landscape, fascinating cultural scene and affordability. For this reason, Bali attracts digital nomads all world wide, including a Black expat group called ‘Black In Bali.’

Colombia

Colombia elected its first Black women Vice President this 12 months, so it’s no surprise that it might be a haven for Black women. Safer than ever and brimming with incredible things to see and experience, Colombia belongs at the highest of your travel bucket list. Amazing street art, incredible sites, unparalleled nightlife, gorgeous beaches, delicious food—the list goes on and on. Also, Colombia is the one country in South America with coastlines on each the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea so that you get the very best of each worlds.
