For the water effect, you might try blending white with the water colour on your brush. (That’s how it looks in the water)
It also has a soft edge to it.
Lightning has a hard edge.
I’m pretty sure that’s usually the reason artists end up making a water effect that looks like lightning.
(I’ve looked very closely at water for this reason- ever since I first got in a pool/ocean)
