Zaya Wade and stepmom Gabrielle Union are one stylish duo! On Thursday evening, the 2 showed up dressed to the nines on the star-studded GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles. Fifteen-year-old Zaya wore a black satin jacket, which she coordinated with matching shorts and a pair of white knee-high sandal heels, and Union, 50, dazzled in a colourful beaded gown. Once inside, Zaya linked up with actor Angelica Ross, they usually posed for pictures together.

While Zaya’s dad, Dwyane Wade, wasn’t in attendance on the ceremony, he made sure to support his girls on Instagram, posting photos of his wife and daughter on his Instagram Stories.

Zaya’s latest appearance comes on the heels of her recent interview with Dazed, wherein she opened up in regards to the highs and lows she’s faced since coming out as trans on the age of 12. She explained, “I mean, a number of attention equals lots more hate, a number of transphobia, and [there is] a number of pressure on me, but I’m also capable of reach more people. The positives of getting such an inclusive platform completely outweigh the entire negativity online, which my support system has enabled me to filter out. It has allowed me to let within the positivity and distribute it to the entire trans people on the earth who need a voice and provides them a platform to get inspired to live with themselves without being afraid.”

Zaya also praised her family for his or her unconditional support. “I believe it is not my job, nevertheless it’s my honour to proceed and further my family’s education and appreciation for the whole LBGTQ+ community as we grow together,” she said, noting that her family are at all times working to learn more and combat misinformation and hate together. Dwyane and Union are also parents to 4-year-old daughter Kaavia, who joins Dwyane’s two other children, Zaire, 21, and Xavier, 9, from previous relationships. He also has custody of his nephew, Dahveon.
